31 Days Of Space: The Spooky Frontier – The Color Out Of Space

space the spooky frontierThere have a few attempts to bring H.P, Lovecraft’s The Colour Out of Space to film. The first was the 1965 Die, Monster, Die! with Boris Karloff. It strayed far from the original story and was a pretty mediocre effort overall. It’s watchable but not great.

The next attempt would happen in 1987 with The Curse. It’s a little closer but still kind of messes up the story at the end. In 2010 Huan Vu crafted a German made adaptation that is not only a great little horror movie but a pretty faithful adaptation too.

color-out-of-spaceThere’s three time periods. In the 1970s a man is trying to find his missing father. He tracks him to a small village where the man discovers a mystery. In the 1930s a meteor crashes near a farm in a small community (man that happens a LOT in sci-fi horrors).

When the locals and some scientists go to investigate the meteor it dissipates but the scientists unfortunately cracked a part of the meteor and a goo-like colour seeps into the water. The farmer that owns the land near the crash starts experiencing some strange occurrences. His crops come in but are inedible. The animals all start acting strangely. Soon people are starting to go mad.

This low budget movie was shot in black and white which gives the film an eerie, shadowy, moody feeling. Despite the low budget the movie works way better than the previous two attempts to bring Lovecraft’s work to the screen. Well worth checking out.
