Oookay, anyone else see a problem with this picture? (I’m no professional photo-guy, but I’m betting it’ll be clear enough.)
Let’s see: The fine folks at Otowa Japanese restaurant (shameless plug: the food is awesome) have a fairly obvious sign in the door noting they’ll be closed from May 13 to May 30; today is Monday, May 14; a shitload of copies of the Monday, May 14 Metro are stuck on their door.
Sigh.
I’d be fine with Metro basically making asses of themselves with the worst first impression ever since their arrival in the city a month or so ago (for more on the “making asses” and “worst first impression ever” stuff, our Planet S Admin Master’s angry and fun post on April 26 on our Facebook page, if you wanna hunt back and find it), if it wasn’t for the fact that it hurts us in some ways as well.
For nine (almost 10!) years, we’ve been a free magazine trying to offer up quality progressive news and kickass arts, dining, music and so much more coverage to Saskatoon. We’re pretty proud of what we do. For every one of those years, we’ve respectfully asked for permission from every single establishment you can find our copies in. We’re pretty proud of that too.
So when newer free papers like Metro slap obscene amounts of copies surreptitiously into establishments or onto doorknobs without permission (by the way, I’m looking at you too here, Verb — although at least you’re not daily), drop their crap on our racks, plop streetboxes onto private property without permission and generally do nothing more than contribute to a tornado of wasted paper in the downtown, I get pissy.
First of all, it’s just plain stupid and ignorant. Second of all, it tars us with the same brush — and our tireless distribution manager and her team work way too freakin’ hard for that.
So for the love of gawd, Metro — give a shit and do stuff right, or piss off.
