As part of ConsentFest (May 24-26), Saskatoon’s second annual SlutWalk goes tonight, and you should be there to show your support! What the hell is ConsentFest, and why in the world would I want to go to a “SlutWalk,” you ask? Well, just listen to the organizers:
"Whether a fellow slut or simply an ally, you don’t have to wear your sexual proclivities on your sleeve, or make a political statement. We believe that rape, harassment and sexual abuse, and the victim blaming afterwards, should not be tolerated regardless of any gender identification, sexual orientation, age, ethnic background, and religious or political belief. Sexual assault is sexual assault, no matter how little clothing is worn or how much alcohol has been consumed. With your support, we can spread the word. Please, join us in the movement to help educate our communities and end victim blaming."
Seriously: do you have a mother / sister / daughter / aunt / female friend / wife? (Or for that matter, a male equivalent of any of those, because sexual assault can happen to anyone.) I thought so—which means you damn well should be supporting this cause!
The walk kicks off at 6pm tonight at Isinger Park (just outside the Farmers’ Market), winds through the downtown and finishes up at the Broadway Theatre for a special screening. Head to ConsentFest’s Facebook page for all the details on the SlutWalk, as well as all the other events happening over the next few days. As you can see from the picture, last year's turnout was pretty kick-ass--help make it even better this year!
