I love the city during Jazzfest. Music floats through the air and everyone seems to have a little more bop in their step. You can hear the notes from the stages drifting across the river, permeating the city. I’m going to miss Jim McCrory’s take on it --- he used to give me the scuttlebutt on which acts were must see. I hope they do some kind of dedication to him at the festival this year.
Friday June 22nd to Sunday July 1st is the 2012 Sasktel Saskatchewan Jazz Festival. There are tons of performers to see --- and the best part is that some of our local talents get to appear alongside international performers. There’s lots of jazz and non-jazz to check out this year, from Jill Barber and Elliot Brood to Dianne Reeves and Downchild.
There’s also the TD Jazz Intensive, teaching youth of all skill levels how to play, all leading up to a public perfomance during the festival. M’man Mark Dejong is one of the clinicians, which would be a real treat; he has considerable talent, teaching chops, and he’s shared the stage with the likes of Ray Charles. (you can also see Mark and the Outer Bridger Ensemble June 27th at the Broadway Theatre).
For Box office info and a schedule, hit up www.saskjazz.com. There is still time to buy tickets, so get em’ before they sell out, like Feist did.
