Darcie is a Regina-based vocalist who performs solo and with the band 3o6. She’s had a love of music for as long as she can remember, she says, and when she was writing up this top six she connected songs in ways she didn’t think were possible. So without further adieu, here are six songs that mean a lot to her. /Gregory Beatty

“Let It Be”
The Beatles, Let It Be (1970)

This song has incredible sentimental meaning to me. It played at my Aunty’s funeral (whom I was incredibly close to) and is the song I listen to every time I feel like I’m stuck in a negative place and need a reminder that sometimes you just need to let things be as they are. YouTube

“She Used To Be Mine”
Sara Bareilles, What’s Inside: Songs from Waitress (2015)

I ugly cried the first time I heard this song. I stumbled upon it during a very tumultuous period in my life and instantly connected with it. It’s a song describing the loss of who you were before a series of unfortunate and traumatic events took the innocence of youth away. YouTube

“No Hard Feelings”
The Avett Brothers, True Sadness (2016)

This song talks about end of life and how we shouldn’t hold grudges toward those who have harmed us so we can enter the afterworld in a state of peace. Seth Avett’s descriptive lyrics elevate the meaning behind this song in ways I can’t even fathom. YouTube

“I Will Be”
Christina Aguilera, Stripped (2002)

Not only does Christina’s voice give me chills (she is one of the greats of our generation), this song in particular hits in a way that makes me know that no matter what I’m going though, I am strong and can get through all the hardships — even if it’s on my own. YouTube

“Your Song”
Elton John, Self-Titled (1970)

This is a song that I’ve come to love over the years. It was solidified as a song that means a lot to me when I was pregnant. The first time I felt my baby kick I was singing this song. For the first few years of his life this became a song that I would sing to him before bedtime. YouTube

“October”
Evanescence, Self-Titled (1998)

If there was ever a song to listen to when you feel as though you’ve let yourself down or lost yourself as a person — this is it. I listen to it when I feel like I’m letting the world down as a reminder that how others perceive me doesn’t matter. YouTube
